Appearance
height 4'9" (145 cm)
build wiry
hair white
eyes violet-red
features Ilphyl is short (4’ 9”) and has a wiry build, with a face that is all angles (and not just the ears). Their skin is charcoal grey — dark, and with purple undertones that means they don’t just look like a dark-skinned human. They have fine, white hair which they tend to wear long (though often tie back or braid). Their eyes are red-violet, and unusually dark; it is worth noting that if you see Ilphyl outside in daylight, they will be wearing tinted glasses. Their left arm has a complicated tattoo in elvish script in a metallic grey that almost blends with their skin.

clothing/dress While working, Ilphyl generally favors utilitarian clothing that covers most of their skin, as a force of habit from living on the surface after being born in the Underdark. They also tend to favor greens and browns, both as camouflage in their environment, and an old holdover of ‘fashion choices that do not look like shorthand for villainy’. (Ilphyl would probably go full mushroom and cobweb ‘spooky nature witch’ aesthetic if they weren’t constantly worried either about divine retribution or having to explain that you can be a dark elf who likes spiders without having to worship Lolth.)
Powers
elf abilities
All elves have keen senses and some ability to see in low-light. Dark elves, having spent generations living deep below the surface, can see in total darkness (though they lose color vision). The trade-off is that bright sunlight is painful and they cannot see well at all. Yes, they still burn easily, despite being dark-skinned.

Also of note is that elves need less rest than humans; they can spend half the normal time humans spend sleeping in a meditative semi-conscious state for a good night's rest. Elves may sleep if sick or injured, though they are immune to magic to induce sleep.
wild shape
Druids are natural shape changers, using the ability 'wild shape' to take on the forms of animals they have seen. Ilphyl focuses on wild shape (Circle of the Moon druid for those playing at home) — they can turn into most animals they’ve seen and stay like that for several hours. They are an unmodified version of that animal — while they keep their mental abilities, they can’t talk (unless wild shaped as a species that can mimic voices) or have hands. Should their animal form be ‘killed’ or lose consciousness, they will automatically shift back to elf and not inherit their injuries from that form.
spellcasting
Ilphyl is a druid, which means that not only do they have access to magic themed around nature, but they can change spells with meditation and prayer at the beginning of their day. Ilphyl’s spells usually require some combination of words, gestures, and a focus (Ilphyl has a carved piece of zuhkwood stipe, a giant mushroom that takes the place of timber in the Underdark); particularly potent spells can require other components (for instance, diamonds for high-power healing spells). Ilphyl can change out spells during their daily preparations. On the fly, they can also use the spell energy to heal themselves in animal form instead. Ilphyl cannot cast spells outside of their elf form, but can keep focusing on spells while shape-shifted.

Ilphyl does know a few spells that draw on their own elven heritage. They also have a magical tattoo on their left arm that takes the place of armor (equivalent to something like chainmail). The tattoo is usually the only thing Ilphyl keeps while in wild shape, though they tuck it (and everything else) elsewhere if they are trying to be sneaky.

I'm going to put in a spell list later, as well as a list of Ilphyl's favorite wild shape forms.

ACTIVE TIMES/PACE: Evenings, US Central Time
    BRACKETS/PROSE: Will match.
OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: None noted

    IN CHARACTER

    PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Yes.
    PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Yes, but check.
RELATIONSHIPS: Yes; I tend to play Ilphyl as equivalent to a 16-20 year old human.
PSYCHIC & PSIONIC INFORMATION: Resistant to certain mental magics, particularly sleep and charm. Ilphyl defaults to expressing their emotions, but might close up if feeling threatened.
MAGICAL INFORMATION: Has a distinct magical glow around their left arm, anchored to their tattoo. A spellcaster, whose magic is partially anchored in nature, and partially granted by a patron god. (Druids are ambiguous like that.)
MEDICAL INFORMATION: Equivalent to a human in their late teens/20 at most. Unusually strong reaction to sunlight; they can barely see in full daylight and will sunburn despite their dark skin. Also has a male phenotype if you needed to know.
OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: Ilphyl has a pretty messed up backstory, including religiously-motivated child abuse, sexism, fantastic racism, NB/transphobia. Ilphyl does not intentionally bring this up, but they occasionally forget what a typical normal baseline is.

Also, while it doesn't trigger Ilphyl, they have a fondness for invertebrates meaning they will bring up bugs/spiders/etc.

    OUT OF CHARACTER

    BACKTAGGING: Always
    THREADHOPPING: Sure
FOURTHWALLING: Not applicable for an OC, but feel free to know D&D setting facts.
NOT INTERESTED IN: Any sex is fade to black once clothing starts coming off.

OOC: Opt Out Post (Dream Station)

Let me know if you don't want tags in general, or to steer away from certain content warnings.

Ilphyl's backstory involves physical and verbal child abuse rooted in religion, and includes elements of sexism and transphobia/NBphobia. Ilphyl is unlikely to go into detail to anyone without warning them ICly. Unfortunately Ilphyl isn't always the best at knowing what parts of their childhood go from 'funny story' to 'wow, that's messed up', and they tend to use a dark sense of humor to cover for discomfort.

Let me know OOCly and I can make sure things stay off the subject.

Also, Ilphyl is very fond of invertebrates and mushrooms and other 'creepy-crawly' parts of nature. If you have any phobias, I can avoid any talk of spiders, etc.

    Ilphyl's Family/Hometown/Pre Game Adventures

I set down some of the details when planning Ilphyl's palace run, so I'm moving it to DW. Post will be edited for details. Very little of this came up in game, though I did send the GM my notes on Ilphyl. (It did come up that Ilphyl cannot speak more than a few words of Gnomish, despite being trained as a druid by forest gnomes, and that they they have three older brothers.)

ExpandCW: Abusive Family Dynamics, Religiously-Motivated Abuse )

Ilphyl has a number of female cousins of various ages. Probably a few male cousins too.

    Pre-Adventure Travels

    TBA

[1] Ilphyl never talks about or thinks of themselves as anything other than male in the context of Lolthite society, because Ilphyl has internalized that what Ilphyl wants in that society does not matter.

    Ilphyl Palace Run

    Content Warning

Parts of Ilphyl’s past deal with religiously motivated child abuse, sexism (albeit fantasy sexism as it is against male drow), transphobia and fantasy racism. If you want to engage with Ilphyl’s Palace, but not this content, let me know and I can make sure you stay on an alternate route. I’ll also put warnings on particular rooms if it seems likely to come up, and use the subject lines of threads to add in warnings if it comes up unexpectedly.

    Goal
Find and return Ilphyl's consciousness to prominence. You know it will take the form of a small bat, but aren't sure how you know this.

⯌ Off-Limits I have no idea; if something bothers me, I’ll add it.

⯌ Other Ilphyl is an adolescent. Ilphyl has been an adolescent for decades, and has spent a couple of decades with people who age faster than other elves. Shipping gets complicated because even Ilphyl doesn’t always know what a peer group looks like. (And, well, while those hormones might mean Ilphyl is interested in sex, I’m not comfortable playing it out.) Also, Ilphyl’s backstory features physical and emotional abuse by family, and fantasy racism and sexism and they tend to deal with it by dark humor, so please let me know if you need to opt out.

APPEARANCE: Ilphyl is short (4’ 9”) and has a wiry build, with a face that is all angles (and not just the ears). Their skin is charcoal grey — dark, and with purple undertones that means they don’t just look like a dark-skinned human. They have fine, white hair which they tend to wear long (though often tie back or braid). Their eyes are red-violet, and unusually dark; they are also working on getting eye protection because they cannot comfortably hang out in full sunlight. Their left arm has a complicated tattoo in elvish script in a metallic grey that almost blends with their skin.
ABOUT: Ilphyl is a dark elf about midway through their first century who had a generally terrible childhood to the point where ‘run away from home, probably get eaten by monsters’ was their reasonable reaction. They avoided death by dumb luck. Like many young people who escape their religious fundamentalist upbringing, they came out as non-binary and embraced nature magic. Except in D&D, that means the ability to turn into a bear or summon lightning. This pretty much left Ilphyl’s job options as ‘hermit’ or ‘adventurer’, and they chose the latter. They met many interesting people, got framed for murder, and ended up saving Waterdeep from a fiendish ‘replace the nobles’ plot. Also taught a community of orcs about agriculture, temporarily adopted a hyena, an otyugh, and a giant spider (not all at once), and became an honorary uncle to the future offspring of a Neverwinter noblewoman and a dragon. Standard D&D stuff.
ABILITIES: Elf abilities: Ilphyl has some inherent magic, can literally see in the dark, and doesn't need to sleep (though they do need to spend 4 hours in semi-conscious meditation).
Druidic Magic: I'll prepare a spell list, but Ilphyl can cast up to 5th level druid spells.
Wild Shape: As a Circle of the Moon druid, Ilphyl can change into most animals. Any damage they take is not carried over to their elf form -- a lethal blow will just force them back to their natural shape, possibly with extra damage carrying over.
OTHER: Ilphyl's backstory has some triggering content. I'll warn about it if it comes up IC, but I'm working on an opt-out post.
